We are looking for some suggestions or input on meals for next year.
This year, as always, the kitchen for Saturday night dinner was crazy hot because we had the ovens and stove top going with heating the sauce for spaghetti and toasting the bread. It also seemed the people took rather small portions of the hot food.
There were tons of compliments on the green bean salad and the tossed salad, and they were eaten well. We are looking for meal ideas that would possibly increase the number of cold salads and cold food and decrease the amount of heat necessary in the kitchen.
One suggestion made was to do a variety of cold salads (3 or 4) and hamburgers for those who need protein and some hot food. This would require only the griddle to be used.
Anyhow, give us some input, and no one says that we have to make a change. If everyone is happy with the spaghetti dinner then we can keep doing that. Let us know what you think!

Keep in mind that we switched from a pitch-in dinner Saturday night to Spaghetti to cut down on leftovers and make clean-up easier and because it could be done inexpensively.
We are looking for possible meal suggestions to keep in this line of thinking.
Mom mentioned to me that in the past she has just used the heat from the pilot light/stove top to warm the bread in the oven. Then the oven is not contributing to the heat of the kitchen.
Also, the griddle could be used to toast the bread, but then it wouldn't all be done at the same time.
I think burgers would be a lot of work - trying to figure out how many to "fix" - forming them on site would be a lot of work - all the condiments, plus it would still be hot in the kitchen - and it seems it would be quite a mess to clean up...
I'll also offer some suggestions later...
The kitchen wasn't as hot this year as it has been in the past-I thought it was comfortable compared to years past--and I don't like being called the meatball nazi, so please keep meatballs off the list-christine
whatever happened to the pizza idea? or maybe there's not a pizza place close enough? pizza and a salad?--christine
Pizza is a thought. At Lincoln this is typically the Thursday night dinner for those who want to go in on it.
Ed wondered if there was a pizza place in Spencer equipped to handle such a large order. I am not sure.
Cindy had a great idea - Kathy can bring her air conditioner unit to install in the kitchen. :)
How about cold cuts for sandwiches and the fixings? It provides lots of versatility so people can customise them to their liking, and little to no prep; plus easy shopping for the suppliers. And no hot surfaces involved of any kind!

I like that idea, Barb II. Maybe we could have two kinds of salad - pasta and lettuce...we could keep the cold cuts simple by having ham and turkey only...we could put the fixins away from the kitchen...like they do in ball parks - so people can get in and out of the kitchen quickly...we can keep the bread simple to...either wheat or white...I LIKE IT!
I like Barb's idea too! I vote that we give it a try!
